“Lithuanian Animation Year in the World. Grand Tour”

  • 04.11.2018

The presentation of the unique project “Lithuanian Animation Year in the World. Grand Tour” will take place at 3:00 pm, November 4, in the exhibition hall of the Museum of Belarusian Cinema History as part of the cultural programme of the 25th Minsk International Film Festival “Listopad”. It is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the restoration of Lithuania’s Independence and the forthcoming 110th anniversary of the birth of Lithuanian animation, to be celebrated in 2020.

As is well–known, Władysław Starewicz, a tempestuous entomologist who decided to make a film about the life of insects, began working with film and animation in Kaunas (Lithuania). In 1910, he completed his first puppet animation film called Lucanus Cervus. He began work on five more animations, which he was to finish only later in Moscow. Over the course of two years, one hundred and ten screenings of the programme are expected to be shown in Lithuania as well as many other countries to celebrate this honourable date. The Grand Tour has already started: Vilnius, Zagreb, Stuttgart, Minsk…

The project has united under one umbrella a retrospective of the best short and feature–length animated films created in different periods as well as an exhibition of graphic materials for them that represent work by both experienced professionals and beginner animators. The retrospective consists of three units – films for children, adults and students’ debutes. The basis of the exhibition is made of the work of Nijole Valadkevicute, Ilja Bereznickas, Jurate Leikate–Askiniene, Valentas Askenis as well as caricatures od Zenon Steinis.

The project has been prepared by the association ASIFA Lietuva, in cooperation with the International Animation Film Festival Tindirindis, the Lithuanian Guild of Animators and the Lithuanian Film Centre, with the support of the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in the Repiblic of Belarus.

The presentation of the project will be preceded by a press conference, which will take place at 2 p.m and will feature the producer, dilm director and director of the International Animated Film Festival Valentas Askenis, producer and film director Jurate Leikate–Askiniene, film director and professor of Vilnius Art Academy Ilja Bereznickas and the screenwriter of animated and documentary films and administrator of the Lithuanian Union of Film–makers Vidmantas Gajgalas.
